Gas Light
Gas Light 2
The Portsmouth Gas Light Co building has stood the test of time for the past 170 years even surviving Portsmouth's "great fires" of 1813. Our restaurant was established in 1989 and is adorned with rich textures of wood, brick, and copper, paying homage to the Gas Light Co's role in Portsmouth's storied history. In fact, every week we burn more than a cord of aromatic wood in our brick oven and wood fire grill. The Gas Light Grill, located on our first floor, is a venue which has something for everyone in your group. We offer a variety of casual dining items, such as homemade clam chowder, wood-fire grilled burgers, and beer battered haddock alongside delicious entree items including lobster stuffed haddock and wood fired steaks. Also, our new wood fired rotisserie serves a different slow cooked dish fresh off the rotisserie every day! Meal prices range from $10-$30 Our wine and beer list also reflect our commitment to catering to our customer’s varied needs. Our beer selection boasts sixteen draft lines and over thirty bottled beers originating in breweries from California to Maine. Our wine list has an offering of 28 wines and will intrigue the wine novice as well as satiate the connoisseur. If cocktails are more your speed you won’t be disappointed either. Our Monster Mary never disappoints, served in a Grey Goose bottle and made from scratch and with 5 rums and fruit juice, our Prozac Punch will certainly put a smile on your face.

We call Moxy a Modern American Tapas Restaurant. What this means is we are tapas in style meaning smaller plates, meant for sharing, yet where tapas is traditionally Spanish and deeply influenced by the Spanish culture and foodstuffs, we are American in products we use, inspiration of dishes, and approach to cooking styles and service. The atmosphere is reflective of a true tapas restaurant...which is very approachable, not overly formal or stuffy, and a place where anyone really can feel comfortable going any day of the week for a beer, glass of wine, snack, or of course a full scale dinner. Price range of true tapas restaurants is also very inexpensive per item, for the idea is to be able to have multiple items, so if they are too expensive on their own, the goal can't be achieved. All our items are between $4 and $15.

Robert's Maine Grill
Roberts logo
Robert’s Maine Grill, the quintessential Maine restaurant, is a version of the big, classic Maine seafood restaurant that was rooted in the tradition of those places, but also inspired by up-to-date food trends like local farm-to-table ingredients and more creative recipes. It’s a place where you can dress up for a special anniversary dinner or come in off the beach in flip flops for a lobster roll and French fries. Décor would also have to fit in this new cross-section of ideas. We built a big light house on the outside. We wanted to help “re-Maine-ify” Route 1. Inside we went open and airy but kept real, unadorned materials: wood, zinc, steel, and glass. High coffered ceilings and an open kitchen - in Maine the food does not come from behind a velvet curtain. You see the creek where the food comes from, you see the kitchen where it’s cooked just before being served and who is cooking it and it gets delivered to your table made of 200 year old repurposed wood - real, direct, simple. Simply stated it's an updated Maine classic. Robert's offers fresh Maine comfort food with an updated twist - highlighting simple robust flavors, a lively bar, raw bar and deck dining on the water. It's casual, approachable, affordable Appetizers are between $9-$19, entrees from $10-$25.

Our location on Portsmouth Harbor certainly gives you a feel for this port town of ours. There is always something going on in the harbor, the ebb and flow of the tide brings change every day. The one thing that will not change is the quality of our seafood at Surf. Our chef/owner Michael Buckley is uncompromising on the quality of product we serve. Our proximity to the seafood markets ensures fresh product, but allowing the seafood to be the star of the plate is distinctly Surf. Our raw bar features crisp oysters from the Northeast waters, smoked seafood, calamari salad, scallop ceviche, sashimi tuna and shrimp cocktail to get your night started. We would describe the general vibe of our establishment as casual while also catering to an upscale taste. For example, our staffs knowledge of our 116 beers brings in an intelligent beer drinker whilst also allowing for the novice to learn and try new craft beers. Our downstairs lounge also caters to both casual and formal audiences, contingent upon the genre of the music. we cater to any and all needs, wants, and tastes. Our menu, with all fresh in house made and smoked ingredients, ranges from $4 to the highest entree being only $19. This does not detract from the quality and care put into making our meals even if it's considered "pub" food.

Moffatt-Ladd House and Garden

The Moffatt-Ladd Mansion was built in 1763 for Captain John Moffatt, a merchant trader in New England’s tall pine trees. During the revolution, the house was occupied by John Moffatt’s daughter, Katharine Moffatt Whipple, and son-in-law, General William Whipple, one of New Hampshire’s three signers of the Declaration of Independence. In 1817 the house was passed on to John Moffatt’s great-granddaughter, Maria Tufton Haven Ladd, and later to her son, Alexandra Hamilton Ladd. Visitors can tour inside the furnished Moffatt-Ladd house, and walk around the beautiful garden that was laid out by Alexandra Hamilton Ladd in the late nineteenth century. Outside there is also a horse chestnut tree that was planted by William Whipple in 1776, upon his return from signing the Declaration of Independence. This tree now stands about 80 feet tall. Lastly, there is an English damask rose that was planted in 1768 by Mrs. Samuel Moffatt.

Prescott Park
prescott park 2
Mary E. and Josie F. Prescott, sisters, and lifelong residents of the City of Portsmouth, had a wish for a public park to be located along the Piscataqua River between lower State Street and Pickering Street. They used the inherited money that they received from their brother, Charles Prescott to purchase land along the Piscataqua River and clean it up. A trust was given to the City of Portsmouth to maintain, and preserve this area of land after their death. Today, ten acres of well-maintained land run along the Piscataqua River. Visitors to the park can see the lovely flower gardens, walkways, seating, docking, fountains, and more.

The Wentworth-Gardner House is a beautiful Georgian mansion built in 1760 for Thomas Wentworth. It was a wedding gift from his father, Mark Hunking Wentworth, a prominent Portsmouth merchant. Thomas and his wife Anne resided in the home with their five children until Thomas died in 1768. Anne remarried and the mansion was sold in 1779 to two brothers. Mayor William Gardner purchased the home in 1793 and added made many things to the house including a garden, barn, a wharf, a nearby utility office, utility buildings, and a store. The house was then sold to Colonial Joshua Peirce. After many more changes he sold it in 1885 and in 1915 the house was purchased by Wallace Nutting, a former congregational minister. Visitors to this mansion can take a tour and see this beautiful Georgian architecture.
